Kids and families come to The Family Y to do more than just work out, swim, play basketball or join an aerobics class. They come to our facilities because we offer a safe, caring place for them...a place where they belong.
Operating in Augusta, GA since 1858, The Family Y serves over 32,000 members in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). In 1997, the local YMCA and YWCA merged to form The Family Y and jump-started a period of tremendous growth. The Family Y is now an association of seven branches, two licensed childcare centers, and Camp Lakeside, an 88-acre campsite. The Family Y, in partnership with the Armed Services YMCA, also operates the BOSS (Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers) facility at Ft. Gordon.
The Family Y provides a variety of programs including physical fitness programs and social opportunities for all ages, swim lessons, and recreational aquatics as well as adaptive aquatics for special needs populations, licensed child care and preschool, seasonal youth sports programs, senior activities and specialized classes, day camps and resident camps. The Family Y also operates before- and after-school programs at 28 elementary schools serving 1000 children in Georgia and South Carolina. The Family Y's association encompasses urban Augusta, Georgia as well as suburban communities to the west and extends east to North Augusta and Aiken, South Carolina.
The Family Y has a budget of $14.5 million per year and provided over $826,000 in 2010 in scholarships for memberships and services to low-income individuals and families. At the Y, no one is turned away for inability to pay. Our mission is to serve individuals and families in the CSRA through programs designed to build healthy spirit, mind and body, reflecting the values of the Judeo-Christian tradition while maintaining respect for all people. The Family Y is a place to belong and to live the values that guide and unite our members: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
