If you’re an adult using an ADHD medication, you’ll want to hear this breaking news about whether it could affect your heart.

Kids aren’t the only ones taking medication for ADHD. More than 1.5 million adults take these drugs too.

“In adults, some of the hyperactivity symptoms can subside, but the inattention seems to persist, and so adults can have difficulty with concentration and poor time management and organization,” Laura A. Habel, Ph.D. said.

However, since common ADHD drugs can raise blood pressure and heart rate, some experts are concerned that they could put adults at risk for heart attacks and strokes.

In a new study, researchers included more than 150,000 adults who took common ADHD medications. They compared them to an even bigger group of adults who didn’t take these drugs. The adults who took these medications weren’t more likely to have a heart attack, stroke or sudden heart-related death than the non-users.

Taking a medication for a longer period of time didn’t seem to raise people’s risk either.

Still, it’s important to talk to your doctor about other medications you’re taking before starting an ADHD drug. This includes medications for high blood pressure, diabetes and depression or anxiety. Also, keep in mind that counseling can help adults with ADHD organize their lives and control their impulses better.
