Making it Through the Teenage Years

This article, entitled Making it Through the Teenage Years comes from Cathy at bountifulplate.

How many of us can remember back to when we were teens? Doesn’t it seem like it was forever?? Our cute little babies eventually turn into teenagers. It is a time of many changes and challenges. Below are some ways to make it through those years:

  • Give them space – Realize that they need their time to themselves.

  • Respect – Treat them the way you expect to be treated.

  • Communication – Keep those lines of communication open, always.

  • Listen – Sometimes your teen just needs you to listen, not dispense advice.

  • Rules – Your teen should still be expected to follow the house “rules” as long as they live under your roof. If they don’t follow the rules, they need to understand there are consequences.

  • Friends – Get to know who your teen’s friends are, so you know who they are hanging out with.

  • Individual – Respect your teen’s individuality .

  • Time – Make time in your schedule to talk to your teen on a daily basis.

  • Positive – Point out the positives about your teen.

  • Role model – Set a good example, by being a good role model for them.

  • School - Keep up with how they are doing, talk to teachers or administration if necessary.

  • Athletics/Music – If they participate in sports or music, be supportive by attending games and/or performances.

Even though the teen years can sometimes be difficult, it is also a great time to teach them those skills that will help them as they transition into adults.
