Top 10 Sodium-Filled Foods

3 simple ways to cook heart healthy

Nine out of 10 Americans get too much sodium every day, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That means only 1/10 of us get it right! And the CDC says just 10 types of foods make up more than 40 percent of our sodium intake. Which ones? Drum roll please…

The top 10 sodium offenders are:

• Breads and rolls
• Luncheon meats like deli ham or turkey
• Pizza
• Poultry
• Soups
• Cheeseburgers and other sandwiches
• Cheese
• Pasta dishes
• Meat dishes like meat loaf
• Snack foods like potato chips, pretzels, and popcorn

Yes, bread beat out potato chips! And there are many other foods out there with sodium that might surprise you. Then there’s the whole crazy amount of sodium in soy sauce.

Remember, you should have no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day. And just 1,500 milligrams is the recommendation for more than half of Americans (if you are 51 and older, African American, and anyone with high blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease).

The CDC’s new report finds the average person has about 3,300 milligrams of sodium per day! And that does not include any salt we add to food ourselves.
