Don't skip your workout because of the cold

As the temperature drops, so may your desire to get outside and exercise. But not getting in a workout because it’s too cold out is a bad idea. You can still go for a brisk walk or jog, as long as you’re prepared. Here are some tips from the Mayo Clinic.

First, protect your head, hands and feet. Wear a thin pair of gloves and a hat or headband. You should also dress in thin layers. If you start to sweat, you can peel off a light jacket and tie it around your waist.

Next, because it gets dark earlier, consider wearing reflective clothing so motorists can see you, and wear shoes that have good traction. And just because it isn’t summer doesn’t mean you can skimp on sunscreen.

It’s also important to stay well hydrated when exercising in the cold. Drink water before, during and after your workout. And if it’s bitterly cold, you may want to shorten your workout – and always pay attention to how you’re feeling.
