Dorm decorating ideas

It's back to school time, which means for college students, it's time to start thinking about decorating dorm rooms and apartments.

We have four ideas from designer Andrew Skipper.

  • Lighting. Dorm rooms often only have overhead lighting, usually fluorescent, which can be harsh and unflattering. The good news is that many big box stores sell affordable table lamps that are cool and modern.
  • Color. Start with a basic black and white, then mix it up with a pattern and coordinate a bright color with your roommate for accessories and throw pillows.
  • Bulletin board. Every dorm room needs a bulletin board, but dress it up with scrapbook pages you can pick up for just a few cents each.
  • Stay organized. Keep your dorm room organized by using boxes, bins and attractive baskets to keep clutter at bay.

Dorm rooms are the epitome of cheap chic, but keep it fun with lots of color and patterns and stay organized so you can enjoy your time at college.
