How to get the most out of your slow cooker

Audra Destefano

Parents, if you’re not using crockpots on a regular basis, you’re missing out on a plethora of easy, delicious dishes.

In our busy lifestyles, planning dinner each night can become tedious in no time. With just a little planning, slow cookers can do most of the work for us. Throw in the ingredients before work or at lunch, and when you come home – dinner is ready.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics offers this advice to make the most out of this kitchen tool.

  • Prep ingredients in advance. Cut veggies and trim meats on the weekend or when you have extra time, and store them in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Make ahead when possible. If your crockpot has a removable insert, you can put all of your ingredients inside and put in your fridge until you’re ready to cook.
  • Finally, reinvent leftovers. Instead of eating roast two nights in a row, use the meat as filling for quesadillas or sandwiches.
