Simpson Dental Associates FAQ

Consequences of a missing tooth: Bone loss
When teeth are missing it can lead to jaw bone loss at the site of the gap in the same way that exercising your body helps keep muscle tone, jaw bone mass is maintained through the stimulation of chewing and biting. When a tooth is missing, the area of bone where the tooth was originally located no longer receives such stimulation and it starts to disappear – a process called resorption. 60% of bone loss in the 1st 9 months after losing a tooth. As the bone is resorbing or shrinking away it is also changing the tissue height in the area.

Shifting of Teeth
Teeth naturally shift towards the middle as you age. That is why lower front teeth can often crowd, especially if you have had braces and stop wearing your retainers. If you lose a tooth the teeth around the area will drift into the spot of the missing tooth. Even the tooth above or below the missing tooth will drift into the area until there is something placed to stop the drifting.

Altered Facial Appearance
The teeth support the bone and the bone supports the face. As the bone is lost the face can start to sink in. The main difference we see is in the space between the nose and the chin which is what we call the vertical dimension. So implants are a great way to preserve this bone and give teeth replacements something to connect to.

Bite problems leading to jaw pain
As teeth shift is will start to affect your bite. When this happens it can put strain on your jaw joint and lead to jaw pain. For the bite to function properly the teeth should all touch together at the same time as you are chewing. If you are hitting on certain tooth or side of the mouth first it can cause either pain in the tooth, muscles or joint.

Inability to talk or eat properly
The teeth are what help you to form words as you speak by controlling the motion of the tongue. For example when a child loses their front teeth they have a hard time saying s's and t's so same goes for adults. Also it is harder to chew certain foods, like fruits and vegetables if you are missing back teeth. It is also putting extra force and wear on the remaining teeth that are doing the work.
