I bought a new app for my smartphone last week that I can't stop using. It reminds of a 2011 version of the TV game show, Name That Tune.

I had seen the Shazam app for the iPhone and was impressed with the simplicity. I mean -- how many times do you wonder what the name of a song is on the radio and the DJ doesn't mention it and we continue to have no idea who sang it?

The apps allows you to hold the phone up to the speaker and its software links to a database to determine the name of the song.

Android has a different version that I'm using called SoundHound.

It's fantastic. Not only does it figure out the name of the song and artist -- it gives the lyrics and tour dates and place to buy the song if you want to own it.

It has another feature that we put to the test. You can sing or hum the song into the phone and it tries to figure out the name and artist.

It doesn't work all the time (I'm not the best singer in the world either), but my son wanted to try it.

I was like: "Give it your best shot." I didn't think he'd have any luck.

He hummed this into the phone's speaker: BUM, BUM, BUM -- bum -- bUM,BUM -- bum -- BUM,BUM. BUM, BUM, BUM -- bum -- bUM, BUM.

The phone took this information in a matter of 10-12 seconds, processed it with the software and on line database and came back with an answer. Frankly, I was surprised it didn't say, "Sorry. Please try again."

So what was the answer?

Imperial March -- Darth Vader's Theme from from the Star Wars movie, Empire Strikes Back.

And that's exactly what he was humming.

It's cool when Dad can still impress his son. Usually, I'm not as impressed with the same information!
