Reconnecting On Spring Break

I am fortunate to work with my wife every day. We have a great time together anchoring a newscast called First at Four in Lincoln. While we enjoy working together, it's easy to be consumed by the tasks of the day. And with the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it can be hard to pay close attention to the kids sometimes. It's easy to get focused on achieving goals, rather than spending quality time. Also, when I'm deep in the daily grind at home, I always find something that needs to be done. The garage needs to be cleaned out, plants need to be cut down as spring approaches, or there is a ton of laundry that needs to be folded.

That's why I'm so glad we booked a short spring break trip to Colorado. We had a great time staying at a great little hotel in Boulder. We toured the area, shopped, hiked the trails, and hit the hotel swimming pool (several times). We even took a drive to Canon City to see the famous Royal Gorge. I took the hands of my kids, and we walked across the Royal Gorge bridge together. I had been there once before, but I forgot you could actually see through the bridge planks to the river 1,000 feet below as you walked! Our trip was nothing but fun, and I'm so glad for the opportunity.

In looking back, I realized how important it is to get away from it all once in a while. You just have to do it. I was able to spend time with my wife without the demands of daily life. And, I was able to really focus on my kids. I remember turning to my kids while walking across the Royal Gorge bridge and saying "I really enjoy being with you guys". They smiled, and I could tell they felt the same way. I also learned you can't put off trips like this. A couple of days beforehand, I thought to myself, "Maybe I should cut the trip short by a couple of days", or "I have so much to do, should I really even be going?". I officially need to stop thinking like that. When the trip is scheduled, you take it, no questions asked. The joy I received from "getting away from it all" is something we all need. Feel free to let me know what you did for spring break. Do you have a favorite memory from a family trip? Let me know!
