Trying to Work Out

I have to admit that I get extremely tired of those voices in the media telling me that I NEED to work out, that I NEED go running, that I NEED to watch what I eat.

Unfortunately, those voices are sometimes right.

My wife recently took part in what's called the "Go Red Better U" challenge with the American Heart Association. It was an opportunity for her to work with a trainer, and other professionals in the health industry.

On one visit to the gym, I got a chance to talk with a trainer that worked with my wife. He stared at me for a moment, then asked, "Are you on an exercise plan?"

I wondered what he saw in me that forced him to ask that question. Then I said, "Not really". I told him, "I walk up and down the stairs 15 times each morning to make beds and get clothes for the kids, and brush teeth, etc."

He chuckled and said, "Come see me. I will make an exercise plan for you." I struggled to find a day to meet with him, but finally did. As it turns out, he worked out a great plan for me. I like it because it only takes 35 minutes, three times a week. I am able to get up in the early morning hours, before the kids are up, and get my workout done. The best part is, I am able to do it all at home.

The simple exercises this trainer gave me have shown some results. I can remember walking on the treadmill for a half hour every day, or trying to jump rope, but I never saw any real results.

I think the point of this "Details Dad" entry is this: I understand how hard it is to find time to exercise. My days are full. But as my trainer told me, you can "get a lot done in 30 minutes, three times a week."

I would suggest talking to a trainer, and see if they can devise an exercise plan for you that you can fit into your schedule. Remember, it has to fit in your schedule or you won't do it. And, make sure it is something that is not overwhelming, or you won't stay with it. You don't have to exercise much, but doing just a little bit each week will make you feel better, and may even force those cholesterol numbers down.

And, maybe it will put some of those voices you hear everyday about the importance of exercising... to rest!
