Taking Your Daughter's Boyfriend on a Family Vacation

Good idea or disaster-in-waiting?

Having your college-age offspring home for summer, after being away at school the past nine months, is wonderful.

Yes, there are the occasional border skirmishes about curfew and checking in periodically, something our daughter got used to NOT doing while she was far away.

But overall it's gone pretty well.

I wanted to seek your input on something:

She's been in her first serious relationship over the past year, as I've
mentioned in an earlier posting.

We are planning a week-long trip to France and Italy this summer.

When I started planning the trip I wanted to make it something she and my wife would enjoy.

Then I wondered: will Scarlet want to go, or would she rather spend that week closer to home so she could continue to see her boyfriend?

Or if she went with us, would she "mope around," missing him?

So we made the decision to invite him to go with us. He happily accepted that invitation!

He's never been out of the U.S. so he had to get a passport.

They're both very excited about the trip and I'm resigned to the fact that they may want to go off and see things that my wife and I may not want to see (or have the energy to chase down!)

Have you ever taken a boyfriend on a family vacation? How did it work out? They're both now 20 years old.

Any nightmares or funny experiences to share?

Any words of wisdom or do you think it's a bad idea?

I look forward to hearing from Moms OR Dads!
