Wedding Etiquette: How to enjoy the bride & groom's day as a guest

It’s that special day for that special couple. You love them. You do. But you haven’t been to a wedding in years. Well, times have changed. Sure, it’s still all about the bride and groom. But you might want to take note of a few of these tips to make sure you’re enjoying yourself, but also ensure that the bride and groom are happy they invited you.

  1. Leave your camera at home. Unless the bride and groom ask you. Please. Leave your camera at home. Most likely they’ve hired a professional photographer, so out of respect for them and the bride and groom, leave the picture taking to the professional.

  2. Arrive on time. The last thing you want to do is show up late to the wedding ceremony! Be sure you arrive at least 15 to 20 minutes ahead of time. Not only will you be able to scout out the best spot to plant yourself and your guest(s), but you won’t be the oddball out arriving after the ‘I Dos’.
  3. Leave your phone at home. Or at least in the car! Don't be that person who gets a phone call in the middle of the ceremony. Or worse! Snapping a picture in the aisle as the bride comes down the aisle! Unplug for the ceremony. Enjoy the moment.

  4. Bring a gift. Ok. Now, it doesn’t have to be a $500 gift. It can be something you know will be special for the bride and groom. Remember. You love them. So get them a little something to commemorate this special occasion.

  5. Mingle. Don’t be the guest that comes for the free food and dips out after eating. Enjoy the company of NEW people. Or the acquaintances you know from the bride and groom. While weddings can sometimes be a little uncomfortable at first because you don’t know very many people, make it an opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone and meet some new friends!
  6. Have Fun. Smile. Be happy. Have fun! Dance if there is dancing. Hug the bride and groom. Enjoy the celebration. It after all, is the happiest day of their lives, so enjoy the moments and soak in some fun!
