There have been a few instances recently where I have told someone that I am the hostess of a new “Moms Everyday” show. If there is a man within earshot, I often hear the response, “Well, what about Dad?!”
So today, I am going to say: Of course…let’s absolutely not forget about our DADs!
The Dad in our household is not only an important part of my kids’ lives, but he is also a very important part of mine. As a mother of 4 young kids and a part-time job, I appreciate that my husband is here to give me a break once in awhile. I appreciate that he is here to back me up and support me when I need to discipline my kids. I am thankful I get to witness my children laughing and playing with their father on a daily basis. I am grateful I have a partner to share my joys and frustrations of parenthood. I am happy to have someone to share my pride when my children accomplish great things. And I am thankful my children have this important person in their lives, too.
There are things that a father provides his children that a mother cannot. He has a different perspective on things than I do. He balances us out! I remember growing up that if I was having a disagreement with one of my parents that it was sometimes helpful to talk to the other. When mom was upset with me and I was upset with her, I was able to speak rationally to my dad, calm down, and perhaps even look at things from her shoes. My dad helped me to do that, (and my mom did when it was the other way around!)
Raising a family is not easy…and hard to do alone. I have the upmost respect for all the single mothers and fathers who are trying to do it on their own. And therefore, I am thankful that I have someone by my side every step of the way through this sometimes difficult journey through parenthood.
With that being said, there is a section on our Moms Everyday site devoted entirely to dads. It is called “Dad’s Corner.” Here you will find blogs written by different dads around the country. They offer their perspectives and experiences on a variety of subject matters relating to fatherhood. Check them out, as I’m sure dads AND moms alike will find them interesting, insightful, and thought-provoking.
So, yes, even though I’m the host of a Mom’s show…I most certainly won’t forget about all you DADS out there! You matter.
