Green Your Next Picnic

Picnics are a great way to celebrate Mother Nature. But all too often these outdoor adventures can actually be bad for the environment with small missteps that you probably never even really thought about. But with a little planning, your picnic can be TOTALLY GREEN.

Every good picnic starts with delicious, locally-sourced food. But what are you going to eat that free-range egg salad on? No plastic, please. Instead, look for bio-degradable plates and utensils made from things like bamboo, sugar cane or corn starch.

Plastic plates, cups and forks will live in the landfill for years. Truth be told, the Earth-friendly plates and flatware are more expensive than plastic, so when it comes to your picnic budget, compromise in other places. Instead of buying disposable napkins, bring cloth. There's no need to load up on a cooler filled with canned drinks, just bring your re-usable bottle.

What would a picnic be without the bugs? While your first instinct might be to grab the bug spray, but instead consider bringing along a citronella-scented geranium. It smells the same as a citronella candle and it does the same job. Set it up next to your picnic spot or rub its leaves on your skin to keep your picnic bug-free.
