Heat Stroke Prevention Tips

This article, entitled "Heat Stroke Prevention Tips," comes from Taryn Vanderford, MomsEveryday correspondent from Lincoln, NE.

The number of young athletes dying from heat-related illness is on the rise. According to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, heat stroke is one of three leading causes of sudden death in sport. Thankfully, this is 100% preventable.

Here are some new guidelines for teenagers and young adults in the treatment of heat stroke.

A combination of physical activity and high heat can cause overheating and severe dehydration, which can cause serious damage in just 30 minutes. Rather than waiting for an ambulance, the new guidelines suggest an immediate cold bath before transporting to a hospital.

Young athletes should also focus on their health when training in high heat – considering that sleep deprivation and illness can cause body temperatures to rise during intense exercise. And they need to acclimate themselves to a new environment when training, because nearly all heat stroke deaths occur a few days after trying something new – like training for a marathon.
