Mustard Detox Bath

Erica Thibodeaux

Mustard is one of the oldest spices, dating back 3000 years. Mustard has been used, since ancient times, as a medicine and an aliment. Combining it with warm water has the consequence of increasing arterial pressure and stimulating blood circulation. At the same time, mustard has anti-inflammatory properties.

I first learned about using mustard in a detoxifying bath from Ashley English in her column, Small Measures, on Design Sponge. I loved the fact that its a simple and natural way to detox and immediately had to try it myself. I ended up changing the recipe a little to accommodate what I had lying around. Here's what I came up with:

2/3 C Mustard seed (ground)
3 C Epsom salt
10 drops of Eucalyptus oil

Mix ingredients together and store in an air tight container. Use several scoops in a warm bath.

Other benefits of Mustard Bathing include:

Detoxifies the Body: Experts suggest that mustard bathing can stimulate our sweat glands to produce more sweat and open up our pores. This helps greatly to detoxify the body.

Relieves Stress and Tension: It is suggested that mustard bathing can help in toning and soothing worn out muscles and nerves. This helps to alleviate stress and tension.

Induces Good Sleep: A good mustard bath can help in relaxing and soothing tired muscles and nerves. This can promote complete relaxation of mind and body, thereby inducing deep sleep.

Relieves Joint Pain and Aches: It is believed that mustard bathing can warm up muscles and promote blood circulation. This helps to treat muscles and joint stiffness, thereby reducing joint pain and general body aches.
