Women and Weight

Stepped on the scale lately? Did you see a few extra pounds - especially around your belly and hips? You're not alone. Studies show a whopping 90% of women between the Ages of 35 and 55 gain weight during these years.

Why? Our bodies are changing. It's a period we go through called perimenopause leading up to the big change: menopause.

So should we just accept that and move on? I say NO! I still care about the way I look and how I look makes me feel good about myself. Shallow? Maybe. But I also think about the health ramifications of excess weight like heart disease and diabetes!

If you're experiencing changes maybe it's time to see your doctor and stay ahead of it. Our hormones can get out of balance during this time which can contribute to weight gain. Ask your doctor for some simple tests that can tell if your hormones are out of whack and what options are available to you.

But good nutrition is key to keeping excess weight off. In fact nutrition is 70% of the solution; exercise and lifestyle 25% and hormones five percent.

So if you think there's nothing you can do about menopausal weight gain, think again. Don't give up!
