Year after year, people vow that THIS will be the year they will lose the weight and keep it off for good. The year starts with a new gym membership and a refrigerator full of diet foods that will guarantee them with results. The first couple of weeks is full of perfection with healthy meals and hours spent in the gym. You step on the scale and see you’ve only lost a couple of pounds at most. All that work for a measly pound or two!
Then life happens and you miss a workout, skip a meal, and have a handful or two of leftover Christmas candy. Before you know it you’re back to your old habits and the motivation is gone. There’s always next year, right?!
Whoa! What happened to all that motivation and THIS being the year you’ll get that body you’ve always wanted? Is it because you didn’t see results in 1 day? It takes time to see changes in your body. You didn’t get the way you did in a day, so you shouldn’t expect to see drastic results in a few days or even a few weeks. If you’re constantly focusing on getting results, you will never change. Why? Because when you don’t see immediate change you’ll quit…..again. Focus on changing your habits slowly, and the results will follow. Be patient and cut yourself some slack. And do something DIFFERENT. Isn’t the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over and expecting to get different results?
Now let’s talk about motivation. It’s normal to have your motivation go up and down. Heck, even I have a hard time finding the motivation to exercise and eat healthy all the time. Have you heard that quote from Zig Ziglar? “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.” What helps to stay motivated is knowing your reasons and why you have certain goals. When your motivation is low, this is the time remind yourself of your reasons. Easier said than done, but it’s just something you have to do. No one ever said reaching your goals was going to be easy, but anything in life worth having never is.
