Top 10 Restaurant Menu Trends for 2013

Top 10 restaurant menu trends for 2013

In 2012, we saw more restaurants add healthy options, take salt off tables, and join the Kids LiveWell program to offer healthier choices for children. And I’m happy to share that a new report says restaurants will continue serving up healthy trends in 2013.

The National Restaurant Association (NRA) surveyed more than 1,800 professional chefs about next year’s culinary forecast. Here’s what the “What’s Hot in 2013″ report says will be the top 10 menu trends:

  1. Locally sourced meats and seafood

  2. Locally grown produce

  3. Healthful kids’ meals

  4. Environmental sustainability as a culinary theme

  5. Children’s nutrition as a culinary theme

  6. New cuts of meat (e.g. Denver steak, pork flat iron, teres major)

  7. Hyper-local sourcing (e.g. restaurant gardens)

  8. Gluten-free cuisine

  9. Sustainable seafood

  10. . Whole grain items in kids’ meals

Non-wheat noodles/pasta, food trucks, and smaller portions for a smaller price made it to the top 20 of this survey.

To make room for the new trends, some old ones are fading into the sunset. Here are a few fads the NRA report says are on their way out:

  • Froth/air/foam

  • Gazpacho

  • “Fun-shaped” children’s items

  • Mini-burgers/sliders

  • Flavored/enhanced water

  • Bacon-flavored chocolate and desserts

  • Flavored popcorn

Anything you’re sorry to see go? I never understood that whole bacon trend…
