Treating Cuts And Scrapes

As a parent, you have to be many things, and a nurse is one of them. When your little one falls and cuts or scrapes himself, do you know the best way to treat the wound?

There are many old wives’ tales about the best way to treat a scrape or cut. Should you use hydrogen peroxide? Rubbing alcohol? And should you let the wound air dry or use a bandage?

Doctor Charlotte Lim says the best way to take care of an open wound, no matter how big or small, is to clean it with water. You should not use hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol, because it can wipe out healthy tissue. Dr. Lim also recommends keeping the wound covered at all times as it heals.

If you notice the wound is not healing, don’t mess around; contact your doctor right away. You don’t want the infection to spread and get worse. The symptoms of an infected would are increased discharge and blood or other fluid coming out of the wound. The discharge or pus may have an odd color or bad smell.
