Foods to Eat to Boost Fertility

Infertility is a common problem that affects millions of Americans, but what you put into your body can make a difference when it comes to growing a healthy baby. Being healthy yourself is crucial toward getting pregnant, and that goes for both women and men.

Infertility can be caused by many things including age, weight, endometriosis, sexually transmitted diseases, smoking and alcohol. While some things can’t be helped, others can.

Maintaining a healthy weight is key in getting pregnant. Being obese or underweight both reduce your chance of getting pregnant easily because excessive fat or lack of it can affect ovulation. According to the National Infertility Association, 30 percent of infertility cases are caused by weight extremes. Small changes make a big difference.

Incorporating healthy foods into your diet will prepare your body to the incredible task of carrying a baby for nine months. According to the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, there are foods you can eat to help you on your journey to a healthy baby.

  • Iron rich foods
    - Spinach, beans, eggs, lentils, red meat, artichoke, dried fruit, iron-enriched cereals and grains, mollusks
    - Citrus fruits, berries and bell peppers enhance iron absorption

  • High fat dairy
    - Milk, yogurt, cheese

  • Monounsaturated fat
    - Foods like avocados and olive oil that are rich in healthy fats

  • Folic acid
    - Folic acid won’t boost fertility, but is key in healthy fetal development. Eat dark, leafy greens, asparagus, broccoli, citrus fruits, beans, lentils, seeds and nuts

Eating a well-rounded, balanced diet in general is great for overall health, and will maximize your chance of getting pregnant. Men, too should eat well, and consider taking a multivitamin.
