Smart Living: Healthy After School Activities

Some kids are learning the importance of exercise and healthy eating after school.

At Robyne Friedland's house, a group of kids is learning about how to fuel their bodies by having fun.

The hold something called Nutrition Camp each day after school.

"You can eat apples, maybe vegetables like carrots," said one boy.

Their daily activities start with reading, jumping, learning and it all ends with a lot of flavor.

"Kids love cooking, and they love feeling a sense of accomplishment out of seeing their finished product," said Robyne.

On this day, they're making fruit crepes.

"That would be four eggs, slightly beaten," read off one of the boys.

They add melted butter, milk, flour, sugar, plus a dash of salt.

"Half a teaspoon, which is just a little bit, will bring out the sweetness of that sugar," said Robyne.

They then spike it with a shot of vanilla.

They mix it all together, cook it, then stuff it with their favorite fruits!

"It's a great learning tool while also having fun, and it tastes good," said Robyne.

A little cocoa adds a sweet touch that kids love.

"A mixture of strawberry, banana, and this wonderful chocolate," said another little boy.

If you want to help your kids eat healthier, tell them that lean protein, like turkey, and calcium in dairy products can give them strength for sports.

The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables add shine to skin and hair and eating a healthy breakfast can help them keep focus in class.
