Choose a stroller that stays cool on hot days

Presented by: KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- There are many stroller options for all different ages of children that have different features and styles. On hot days, it is important to have a stroller that will not add heat to your baby.

Some things to look for in a stroller are light colored fabrics that do not absorb heat, a shade that blocks sun but does not cover the entire stroller, and chest harness and straps that are not thick which traps heat.

Kristy Carter is a mother of three children who says she takes her child out of the stroller often to keep him cool.

"I might try something that's a little lighter color than black," Carter says, "but it hasn't been a huge problem for us. I try to find parks that have shade so we can hide out especially during the heat of the day."

Experts compare a hot stroller to adults sitting in a camping chair. They suggest taking children out of the stroller frequently to let their skin cool and have ventilation.

Dr. Heather Edgley, ER Physician at East Tennessee Children's Hospital, recommends purchasing a stroller that has shade.

"Anything that comes over the top of the baby and potentially blocks air flow for the baby is dangerous especially if that particular screen doesn't allow air flow in and of itself," says Dr. Edgley.

In addition to ventilation, it is also important to find a stroller that has cool fabric.

"If you think about it, they're not getting air circulation on the back side, their only getting something from the front," Dr. Edgley says. "Strollers are frequently dark in color because that hides stains. When it's hot outside it's much better to use a light colored stroller that will allow more air flow and less heat trapping."

Dr. Edgley says the same suggestions apply for parents who use the infant wraps for small children.
