It’s how we got around the city. That and on foot. The taxi was my mom’s first taste of New York City.
Mom had just turned 70. I don’t think she expected to be celebrating this BIG birthday in the BIG Apple. But, here we were. All my quickly-laid out plans turned into this…a Labor Day weekend get-away for four with my mom, mother-in-law, sister-in-law and me.
We hopped inside the yellow icon outside the Newark airport. Eighty dollars later, we survived the tolls, the Lincoln tunnel and the crazy cabby driving to arrive in the city.
Four ladies (two a bit overwhelmed at first…click on the slide show) set out to paint the town red, and packed in three days full of sites, meals, shows and shopping. We spent some green, and then returned home with a symbolic bit of yellow for the kids.
Taryn Vanderford loves being a mom to her two elementary-aged kids, Jacob and Olivia. Activities with the kids and a full-time job keep Taryn pretty busy, but in her free time she enjoys taking pictures, reading, Jazzercising, gardening, traveling and playing the piano for church.
We brought back the “I love NY” t-shirts, a New York Mets hat for my son, an American Girl matching outfit for my daughter and her doll, and the yellow NYC icon…the toy taxi!
It’s funny, of all the souvenirs, this little yellow cab from my mom may be my daughter’s favorite. Olivia even got creative and transformed the small box that held her American Girl doll clothes into a NYC scene.
She colored the lid black to mimic the street and the inside of the box became buildings. Olivia even drew an elevator with people inside. And she pasted traffic lights to the top of the box.
The toy taxi now lives in that citified-box or it's in Olivia’s messenger bag, going to and from school everyday.
“Mommy, can I take my taxi to college someday and put it on my desk?” Olivia asked.
And knowing Olivia, I bet that little taxi makes its move to the dorm someday. It will be a sweet reminder of her grandma and that birthday trip to New York City.
But even before that time, I have a hunch I’ll be making more plans to take my daughter to experience the real thing…a taxi maneuvering the streets of NYC.
Happy Parenting and Traveling!
