School Excitement...No More!!

Bug (my daughter) is back-in-school (full-time). On the first day, she was eager to get ready and all smiles (I have the pictures to prove it). Bug was excited about seeing all of her friends and the idea of spending all day at school. She did great on the first day. As she headed into her classroom, I didn’t even get a goodbye (just so you know, I didn’t expect to). I was thankful, Bug bounced into her classroom with so much excitement.

So fast-forwarded....

After 3 days of school, that eagerness and smile is already gone! Ugh…this could be a long year. When I picked Bug up from the first day of school, she was talking a mile a minute. She told me all about her school day and that her most favorite part was playing on the “big” playground! I told her I was glad she enjoyed the playground because she would get to play on it again tomorrow. This is where everything came to a screeching halt!!!!!

Bug: What do you mean I have to go to school tomorrow?
Mommy: Well honey, you go full time now. This means you have to go tomorrow too.
Bug: I don’t want to go back to school tomorrow because I don’t like it.
Mommy: Honey, you just told me you loved school. Why don’t you like it all of a sudden?
Bug: I just don’t!!
Mommy: Bug, that isn’t a good reason. Why don’t you want to go to school tomorrow?
Bug: Mommy, they make me take a nap and I don’t like naps
Mommy: Well honey you don’t have to take a nap, you just have to rest.
Bug: I don’t like my mat or my blanket. I am not going to school tomorrow!!
Mommy: Not liking nap time is not a good reason to not go to school. Honey, you have rest time at home, just like school, so what is the difference? (I didn’t really get an answer, just a pouty look).

Talk about a 180 degree turnaround! This disagreement about school and nap time continued until the next morning. Bug didn’t have as much pep in her step. She was slower eating breakfast, getting dressed, and brushing her teeth. By the time we got to school, Bug was trying to convince me to pick her up early (uhhh…no!). I told her she would have more fun at school because mommy was going to do laundry and clean the bathrooms. Bug must have been desperate because she offered to clean the toilets!!! Once Bug got to school she was fine. I think she wanted something to argue about. Honestly, that child would argue with the wall (wonder where she gets that from?!?!).

Getting ready this morning was a little better. Bug was quicker about getting dressed and brushing her teeth. Plus, I only heard one complaint about nap time. She actually seemed excited about school.

I know we are in for a few more weeks of adjustment. The truth is this is a big change and she is just downright exhausted!!! I think we are all looking forward to the weekend and sleeping in! Got to love transitioning into back-to-school mode!

So how is your child’s first week? Any meltdowns or I don’t want to go to school conversations?

Happy School Year!!
