I know that reality shows are appealing to a lot of TV viewers - especially young viewers. After all, for most of our kids that's been the dominant TV genre since they were born!
But enough is enough! I found my 13-year-old last night watching a ridiculous show where parents dress little girls up like adult women and parade them on stage at the ripe old age of five!
I wasn't paying attention until my daughter called me over to watch! For her, it's entertainment. For me, well, it was disgusting! I had a little talk with my daughter about how really silly the show was and she agreed.
Then came a promotional piece of a little, very precocious girl and her family in Georiga. A really obnoxious show!
Did I ban these shows? No. I chose to talk to my daughter about how these shows may be impacting her and her friends' lives though. What is reality? Are reality shows about pregnant teenagers a reality you want? Could your time be better spent?
I've found this (at least in my home) to work a little better than outright forbidding her to watch these shows! It's not a perfect system but hopefully I've planted the value seeds earlier in her life. Now it's up to her, still with strong parental guidance, to begin to make critical choices. Even in choosing something like a TV show that's worth her time.
How do you handle TV viewing in your home - especially with young teens? Let's discuss!
