At what point should you let your kids quit an activity or sport?
Our family has been taking karate for almost two years. Last summer, it took us on a trip to Orlando, thanks to our older son, Dylan, who competed in the U.S. Open tournament. He even brought home a 2nd place trophy that stands three feet tall.
But for the past six months, getting both our boys to attend karate class has become an ever-increasing struggle. We did let our littler guy, Logan, take three months off. It never really was his thing anyway.
I don't want to give it up and neither does my husband. After we started taking karate, positive lifestyle changes began to gradually bloom. We were eating healthier, exercising more at the gym and overall taking better care of ourselves.
But the kids say, "It's not fun anymore."
I tend to agree. My husband and I both are brown belts now and with just a little more than a year before we test for our black belts, the curriculum is getting harder.
I especially don't want Dylan to quit, but I'm getting tired of what I call "The Battle of the Gi." I push and push to get him to change into his uniform and tie his belt. He throws a fit, makes excuses, etc.
I then choose to either:
a) Ignore the fit - which leads to him not getting dressed
b) MAKE HIM get dressed, which seems counterproductive.
Of course karate isn't fun anymore. He doesn't want to go and I force him to.
Back to my original question - at what point is it okay to let him quit? In the end, we decided not to even bring it up. He has about one year left before he can test for his black belt. I think that completing such a task will teach him the skills he will need to accomplish many other things in life.
