Ironing: a Lost Art?

I grew up with a mom who ironed everything! Yes, even our bedding and pillow cases were pressed.

When I reached 12, that chore was handed down to me. I spent a lot of time ironing shirts for my three brothers! Back then, I even ironed their jeans! They hated it. Mom insisted on it!

Today, in my home, I still iron a few things here and there. My husband's shirts, I take to the cleaners.

My mom taught he how to iron a shirt well but it's not something that I feel compelled to hand down to kids. After all, there are all sorts of wrinkle-free fabrics, even wrinkle-free settings on dryers!

Still, I can spot an unironed garmet a mile away! I feel kinda snooty when I see someone in rumpled clothing! Don't they own an iron, I think?

Yes, I judge! Even though I say I don't like to iron and won't insist that my children learn to do it, I made my son take off a pair of wrinkled-up khakis the other day for me to iron! I think I'm becoming my mother!

More of us should take a few minutes to iron! My kids will learn to iron!
