Batter Up! My son is 10!

I can’t believe my son has hit the double digits! It seems like just yesterday, when Jon and I walked into St. Mary’s Hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee to be induced. I was having my first baby and entering into the “mom world.”

At eight pounds and five ounces, Jacob Sterling entered the world with the same personality he has today…good-natured, sweet and ready to eat!

This was the best day of my life, and I enjoyed every moment of the hospital stay. We left the hospital on the 4th of July with Jacob’s special red, white and blue hat given to him by the staff.

And now, a decade later, we’re at our home in Lincoln celebrating a big birthday with an All-American party.

Jacob loves sports. He watches ESPN all the time. And as a pitcher, I notice him patterning his stance after the MLB players.

So, after debating between the Avengers and sports, we decided to go for a home run with a vintage baseball party. You know I love to decorate, so here’s how I did it:

I introduced red, white and blue with a blue checked picnic tablecloth, and grouped a basket of baseballs, an old wooden bat and flags in a ball jar. For a keepsake, guests signed the bat with paint pens.

At Rocket Fizz, I found some old-fashioned candies that made a festive edible display. I stuck red licorice into a blue ball jar and these fun festive hot dog holders from Oriental Trading Company added some 7th inning charm to the plates.

For a craft project, the kids made 4th of July crowns. And for games, we played with a baseball toss, a spoon relay, a pitching machine and teamed up for a baseball game.

Finally, for party favors, we handed out cracker jacks for a grand slam affair.

And I can’t forget to mention my 7-year-old daughter playing her recital piece “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” to add her little touch to the party.

So after a weekend of cleaning, cooking and decorating, I’m exhausted. But every April and July, I do it all over again. I’ve been a mom for 10 years now, and with every birthday I'm thankful for my two greatest gifts...my kids.

Happy Parenting!
