Are you the type of person who can eat anything and never gain a pound? Or does one small indulgence show up on the scale? Metabolism is the process by which our bodies convert what we eat into the energy we need to function.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is laying out some truths on metabolism.
First, you can change your metabolism. While genetics play a huge factor, you can boost your metabolism by increasing lean muscle mass. This becomes more significant as we age and our muscle mass decreases, leading to a slower metabolic rate.
Second, there is no magic food that will speed up metabolism for the long run. Instead, focus on a nutrient-dense diet and portion control.
Third, it doesn’t matter what time you eat, it matters what you eat.
And finally, low calorie diets and skipping meals will not jumpstart weight loss. Eating too few calories can trick your body into thinking it’s in starvation mode, slowing your metabolism.
