Getting Your Kids Back into a Routine After Winter Break

While many parents are relieved to send the kids back to school after winter break, the kids probably aren't too happy about it. All the bah-humbug in the air can put a damper on the regular routine and make for a long countdown to spring break. Here are a few ways to regain control and get out the door on time:

  • After Dinner:
Go through backpacks. Read and sign any necessary papers and re-pack everything. Set the backpack by the front door with coats, hats, gloves and any necessary things the kiddos will need the next morning.

  • Before Bed:
Set out clothes and shoes. Even if you don't get the whole outfit picked out the night before, at least save yourself the trouble in the morning of looking for the long, lost shoe that always seems to sneak away and hide under the couch after school.

  • In the Morning:
Use timers. Set the timer on the microwave to let the kids know how much time they have for breakfast. Try setting a recurring, two-minute warning alarm on your phone to remind everyone that time is running out! Hopefully, after a few days everyone's internal clocks will catch on.
