Let's face it moms, once we become parents, taking time for ourselves (guilt free) often gets put on the back burner. Our to-do lists and quality family time will almost always trump that "me" time. That being said, we all know how important it is to get that time on our own. Whether it's a long run to clear my head, an hour of uninterrupted reading, or a cup of tea during nap time, that short time for myself really does keep me nourished. Last week, I managed to get away for an entire weekend. As reluctant as I always am to leave my boys behind, I must admit, it felt great to get away for a bit. My mom, sister, aunt and I took off for a girls weekend to New York City.
There really is something magical about New York City in the fall. Ever since my husband proposed to me at the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting ceremony, The Big Apple has always held a special place in my heart. I love the hustle and bustle of city life, the crisp air swirling around the buildings, and the diverse mix of locals and tourists. I also love to see people experience the city for the first time. My mom and sister had never been to NYC before, so it was great to watch them take in all the sights. The four of us had a lot of fun sightseeing, eating incredible meals, and laughing at just about everything. Not only did I cherish all the girl time, but it made me realize how blessed I feel to be related to such amazing, smart, strong and funny women.
As much fun as I had on my little girls adventure, I must say, my favorite part is coming home. Brody was just waking up from a nap when I arrived back from my weekend trip. As I opened the door to his bedroom, I heard a sweet squeal of delight. Brody rushed over to me, put his two little hands on my face and said, "Mommy, I missed you." My heart melted.
Short little trips like that always remind me that it's okay for us moms to do things for ourselves sometimes. The Uelk's lodge didn't crumble during my absence and I came back feeling refreshed. I'd love to get some ideas for another girls weekend in the future. If there are any places you recommend, send me an e-mail. In the meantime, don't forget to take a little time for yourself...you deserve it!
