Life's Challenges

January is the month of tests isn’t it? Our stamina is tested with the short days, cold temperatures and plenty of cloudy skies. But if you are among those working to keep those resolutions alive, the tests are even greater. It is the month to challenge resolve, and push your will power to its limits.

And for all my 30 something and 40 something friends, enjoy the will power you have now, because the tests only get more intense. You have no idea about all the things you’ll be paying attention to one of these days.

Losing weight used to be skipping a couple of lunches, and cutting out the ramen noodles. Now, it seems, I exist solely on raw fruit and veggies, lean protein, and low fat dairy and can barely manage to hold my own.

Exercise used to be running a couple of miles when I had time. Now, I trick my self by doing 10 minutes on the treadmill, 10 minutes on the bike, 10 minutes on the elliptical machine… you get the picture.

Plus, everything is so much more complicated and time consuming now. Moisturizing, exfoliating, anti-aging specialty targeted super acting creams, oils, sprays and ointments, along with hair products to boost the life, the color, energize the ends, smooth the frizz, build volume and hold it all in place and that’s just for my head. There’s the hand cream, body cream, elbow and knee attention to be paid, firming, toning, tanning, and sun screening to be done, not to mention, foot care for dryness, calluses, rough skin, buffing, brushing, pumicing and rubbing the tired aching joints.

There are vitamins and supplements to remember daily for preventing all the things I’m prone to getting at my age. Exercises to keep my brain and mind in top shape so I can remember not to forget to do things like massage cuticle cream into my fingers, to wear sunglasses to prevent eye damage from sun exposure, and to floss whiten and brighten my smile.

A yoga class helps with flexibility but I also have seen that hanging suspended upside down can improve plenty of what ails you, as can swimming. But then when it’s this cold swimming just doesn’t sound appealing. The good news is, you will be hot in the next 5 minutes or so, so maybe swimming will be an option after all.
I’m religiously running a humidifier to fight the dryness, and electric blanket to fight the chill, and generally trying to stand up straight to keep the posture my piano teacher prescribed.

To get it all done, it takes more than will power, my younger more care free friends. It takes shear determination that you are willing to go to battle each day to hold off the clock as long as you can. And to take a minute to remember that each little crinkle that shows when you smile is earned from living life to it’s fullest. So in January take a few minutes to enjoy these days of who you are wherever you are in your life and know that being the best you that you can be won’t stop with the decade you’re enjoying now, it just gets better.
