My Love of ZZZZZZ's!

Liz Fogle

I don’t know about you, but I love sleep (I always have)!!! I seems like I can never get enough, but isn’t that the story of any mom. My love for sleep started at a very early age. I don’t know how many pictures my parents have of me asleep in my plate. It didn’t matter if I was at a restaurant or at home. If I was tired, my parents knew within 10-15 minutes, I would be sawing logs with a peanut butter sandwich as a pillow. In college, I could run on very little sleep. I remember going to bed way past midnight and making it up for a 7:35 a.m. class (yes that is a terrible hour for a class)!

When Bug (my daughter) was born, sleep became a thing of the past! In the beginning, Bug wasn’t blessed with the best sleeping habits. Her reflux would awake her every few hours! It was through consistency and a lot of hard work that we got Bug on a very strict sleeping schedule.

As a 5 year-old, Bug usually goes to bed between 7:30-8:00 p.m. and takes an occasional nap. Within the last few weeks, Bug has been dropping more and more naps. Ugh…bless her heart; she looks like a walking zombie some days. Her little body is still trying to adjust to less sleep. I will admit I enjoy Bug’s earlier bed times because this momma is able to go to bed early. It is not uncommon for my husband and me to go to bed right after Bug. What can I say, we love sleep!!!! I dread the day; Bug wants to stay up later. I just don’t know if I will make it.

This week, I stumbled on a sleep chart for kids. The recommendations come from the National Sleep Foundation. Apparently, Bug is right on target and it is typical for a child her age to not take a nap.

Age Number of Hours Daytime Naps (Hours)

3 month 15 5
6 month 14.25 3-4
