Prom, Please?

It's been a very, very long time since I had to deal with prom season but it all came back to me recently after my son's first prom! It's an understatement to say it's changed!

Gone are the days of sweaty palms and handing the one you want to go with a hand-written note. Kids are asking kids to go to prom with everything from billboards (no kidding!) to decorated cakes and cookies with the question "prom?".

My son chose a Starbucks gift card hidden in his phone case. His intended date was asked to help him get the case off and out popped the gift card with "prom, please?" written on the back!

I was proud that he was polite, adding please at the end of his asking but amazed at how much thought went into this.

And, just in case your teen is almost ready for prom, get ready for the price tag! Cost of admission, dinner and flowers, not to mention limos and the like can all add up.

For instance, the tux rental for my son was $200 alone! Some teen girls spend a fortune on dresses they're likely to wear only once! I'm told by one parent her daughter spent $300 on just the dress, another $100 for shoes! I didn't ask about makeup, hair, manicures, pedicures etc.

I'm bracing for sticker shock in three to four more years when my daughter turns prom age! However, I'm not planning on cluing her Dad in...yet!
