Surviving Family Get-Togethers

My children look forward to heading over the river and through the woods... along I-29 to Grandma's house, this time of year. They know they're headed to meet cousins, eat great food, go to movies, play board games and just hang out with aunts and uncles!

They also actually look foward to sleeping on the floor together on quilts piled high. Yes, for several days, my brothers' families and mine gather at my Mom's house to celebrate the holidays together.

How do we adults survive being together so long? We recognize that families aren't perfect. And we can't control other people! More importantly, we don't try to resolve past issues at this time.

We've learned over the years to just enjoy! Life is short. We've learned to recognize that. That realization came before we lost our dear Dad but we do now make a concentrated effort to come together as one big family and just enjoy!

It's not easy to put aside differences and just let it go but it's worth it. Especially if you help create some lasting, happy memories.
