Following several rounds of regional competitions where the brightest young minds in the country competed for the highest science honor awarded to high school students, the winners of the nation’s premier science research competition were presented this on December 10, 2013 at The George Washington University, host of the 2013 Siemens Competition National Finals.

This year, the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology generated unprecedented participation, signaling students’ growing interest in STEM. A record 2,440 students registered for this year’s competition and a total of 1,599 projects were submitted for consideration. A total of $500,000 in scholarships were awarded to the students who reached the final round with the individual and team winner each receiving $100,000.

David D. Etzwiler, CEO of the Siemens Foundation and Joshua Meier, winner of the $40,000 scholarship at 2013 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology talk about this year’s competition and standout research projects, plus how these projects relate to and could impact our world at large.

David Etzwiler was recently named Chief Executive Officer of Siemens Foundation, a new role charged with expanding the reach and impact of the organization.

Joshua Meier, winner or the $40,000 scholarship at 2013 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology, a senior at Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, NJ, investigated why artificially-generated stem cells age and developed a technique to slow their aging. He also applied this understanding to try to slow the growth of cancer cells by forcing the cells to rapidly age. Joshua’s work has the potential to be used in the clinic to treat cancer patents and opens up new insights that could transform the field of regenerative medicine.

The Siemens Competition is a signature program of the Siemens Foundation, a leading supporter of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in the United States. The Competition is administered by the College Board.
