Yoga has been a part of my life for a long time, and it’s truly been a huge gift to me on so many levels. It started as an exercise regimen but quickly moved into a deeper connection to myself.
Now that I’m a mother I want to share this insight with my daughter and it’s awesome how quickly she wanted to join me in my practice.
At first we started just messing around with a few easy poses that she’d see me do, but I really never thought about how wonderful yoga could be for her. I was recently introduced to yoga classes for kids and I was blown away at how the children reacted to the class. Not only did it keep their focus, it also engaged them in such a positive way. The children practiced balance, flexibility, strength building, listening skills, creativity, and you could tell by watching them that they were building self-esteem.
Yoga creates a non-competitive environment that really lends to a feeling of success in each child. The class I witnessed that involved the parents participating created such a wonderful connection and interaction between the adult and child, it was quite lovely to watch. I am so inspired by how yoga is such a positive way for children to move their bodies, feel connected to themselves as well as others, practice listening and coordination, and have lots of fun!
I now teach my daughter yoga at home and those moments are some of the most inspiring times of connection and true teaching for both of us. I feel so lucky to have this discipline and I love that it’s a resource I can give my daughter for the rest of her life.
