How to Be a Great Friend

This article, entitled How to Be a Great Friend comes from Cathy at bountifulplate.

A great friend is like a rare “gem” and are sometimes hard to find. When you do find that kind of a friend, treasure them and never take them for granted. A definition of a friend according to dictionary.com is "a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard." Here are some ways to be a great friend:

  • Trust – Don’t tell others what your friend has told you in confidence. Once that trust is broken, it is very difficult to remain friends.

  • Support – Even if your friend is going through a difficult time, don’t abandon the friendship. This is when they need you the most!

  • Communicate – Always keep the lines of communication open. If you have a disagreement with your friend, don’t give them the “silent” treatment. Tell them what’s bothering you.

  • Loyalty – Don’t ever talk or gossip about them behind their back.

  • Venting – Realize sometimes your friend just needs to “vent” about something that is bothering her. She might not necessarily need or want advice, she may just want you to listen.

  • Be Yourself – Don’t try to be someone that you’re not. Great friends will accept you for who you are on the inside.

  • Keep in touch – Write a short note, text, tweet, e-mail, call or Facebook your friends. Tell them how much you appreciate their friendship.

  • Don’t be possessive – Realize it is okay for your friend to have other friends.

Remember, be good to your friends and they will be good to you!
