This article, entitled "Fall is in the Air…so what’s cooking in your house?" comes from Jen Lennon, MomsEveryday blogger from Southern Colorado.
This morning before I walked my 8 year old to school, we went out in the yard to gather some leaves for a fall poem project. We found yellow, orange and even a red…which are more rare for Colorado. As I bent down and felt the crisp air close to the ground, I sighed a satisfied breath. Welcome, Autumn. I’ve missed you, my friend.
Fall has always been my favorite season. I love pulling on my cozy sweaters that I haven’t seen for months and walking around in that cool, but not quite cold, air. The vibrant colors of nature never cease to amaze me each year. I guess it signals a time when families gather closer as we head into the dormant season ahead.
And with the arrival of fall comes all those great comfort foods that just don’t work in the spring or summer. A big favorite around our house is Dad’s chili. My husband loves to keep a big pot of chili going all afternoon and then make cornbread from scratch. Nothing beats that smell when you walk in the house with red cheeks from a brisk autumn afternoon. Add some butternut squash with brown sugar and the meal is complete. I’d share the recipe, but it’s all in his head and changes a little bit every time.
I know each year as the leaves turn, those wonderful smells from the kitchen draw us ever closer as a family to spend time together. What’s your favorite fall comfort food? I’d love to hear from you!
