My daughter learned a valuable lesson in toddler party planning: ask Mom.
If you have children or grandchildren who are fairly young, perhaps they, like my daughter, watch the cartoon Sofia the First. It's a pretty cute cartoon about a little girl who just became a princess and is learning the royal ropes. If you've seen this cartoon, perhaps you've seen the episode where Sofia throws a tea party. While she wants a simple affair, her stepsister, Amber, encourages/demands Sofia turn it into a lavish event, complete with ice sculptures. Through it all, the characters are making lists, planning their tea party.
Ever since seeing that episode, Lauren, who is three-and-a-half, has been talking about having her own tea party. She loves to "write lists," which consist of squiggly lines across paper. Frankly, I think it's pretty adorable. She makes lists of who she wants to invite and what she plans to serve. Chief on her invitation list are her two teachers at daycare, who playfully agree to come to her tea party whenever asked. That includes yesterday afternoon when Lauren announced that her tea party was tomorrow. I told her we didn't have a tea party on the calendar, and the conversation ended there.
I knew there could be trouble this morning when Lauren announced the dress she was wearing to school was her "tea party dress." Sure enough, she went on to tell me how excited she was for the tea party at our house with her teachers after school. Sigh. We have no such plans.
When I told her, her little face got so sad, and she burst into tears. They weren't whiny, complaining tears. They were the tears of genuine disappointment. I suggested we host a tea party for her dollies. She didn't bite. I then told her we could plan a real tea party, but we needed to talk about the date first. She went on tell me she already knew what she wanted to serve her friends cookies and mini muffins (she called them "tiny muffins) in the little snowman cupcake wrappers we recently found. The little sweetheart had it all planned out in her head....from her wardrobe to her menu....but forgot to ask mom. The good news is that we're just about ready to throw a tea party! We just need to pick a date and check with her friends! Pinkies up!
