As a woman, I feel I am programmed to worry about my weight. From a young age, you watch beautiful, skinny women on television and see them in magazines and become envious of their beauty. Then, as you get older and have a family you admire their ability to stay in shape and bounce back quickly after childbirth!
However, with age comes wisdom and you realize that celebrities have personal trainers, chefs, nannies, a lot of money! So, they have the ability to take care of their bodies easier. Does it sound like I’m making excuses as to why I don’t have a fit, toned body after three kids? Maybe I am.
Now, I have a daughter who at the young age of seven is saying things like “I want to be skinny” and “I have a fat stomach.” UGH! This is so frustrating! I tell her to not say things like that and that she is perfect the way she is (all the time thinking she has her whole adulthood to worry about her weight because that’s what women do).
It’s a challenge to “teach” kids to accept their bodies whether they are big or small, tall or short. How much emphasis do you put on this issue or is it better to just ignore the negative comments and hope it’s just a phase?
