Ways to Use Fresh Summer Herbs

Fresh summer herbs are ready for picking and whether you get them from your own herb garden or your local farmers market, these edible plants are sure to add a punch of flavor to any meal you’re serving up.

Fresh herbs are a healthier alternative to salt, which if consumed too much can lead to hypertention and osteoporosis. Many herbs have healing flavonoids and are rich in antioxidants.

Herbs are not only healthy, but delicious! Here’s a list of fresh herbs to make sure you have in your kitchen this summer.

  1. Rosemary
    Rosemary is the perfect companion to whatever you have tossed on the grill. The woody herb, rosemary smells like a pine tree and can be paired with chicken, pork, salmon and tuna. It’s also a good addition to a variety of soups and sauces.

  2. Mint
    No herb is as refreshing as mint, but if you’re only getting the flavor by chewing gum you’re missing out. Infuse fresh mint into savory and sweet dishes or your favorite summer drink. Mint goes great with a cucumber salad, or mixed with fresh fruit. It’s used in a variety of Middle-eastern meat dishes; try it with lamb. Top a bowl of ice cream with a few fresh leaves.

  3. Basil
    Nothing says summer like a fresh basil and tomato salad. Add mozzarella and olive oil for a deliciously light meal. Basil grows easy and also complements onions, garlic and olives. It’s the key ingredient in pesto, which goes great with pasta. Add the fresh herb a multitude of savory dishes toward the end of cooking, so its flavor isn’t lost.

  4. Oregano
    Considered a very strong herb, oregano is a staple in Italian and Greek cooking. It’s also packed with antioxidants. Sprinkle it on pizza or add it to any savory pasta sauce. Oregano mixed with olive oil and other herbs also makes a delicious marinade for beef, chicken or lamb.

  5. Dill
    Don’t pass by the dill at the local farmers market. This refreshing herb is delicious with salmon and other fish, but can also complement chicken and pork. Toss fresh dill into your potato salad or mix it with cottage cheese, sour cream or plain yogurt for a savory snack.

  6. Thyme
    Thyme also ranks high in antioxidant content and is a great addition to any herb garden. Thyme is sweet smelling and highly aromatic. It pairs well with pork tenderloin and roasted chicken. Try tossing some onto a baked potato or any roasted vegetables. Add it any homemade soup or stew.

  7. Cilantro
    You already put fresh cilantro in salsa and guacamole, but this zesty herb can make many summer dishes better. Mix cilantro with butter, salt and lime to spread onto roasted corn, veggies or steak. Sauté shrimp and add lime juice and fresh cilantro.

  8. Chives
    Chopped up chives go with just about any savory dish. Mixed with sour cream, chives make a baked potato better. To make the most of the onion flavor use the chives raw. Add to soup or roasted vegetables.
