Does Your Man Need a Wellness Wakeup Call?

This article, entitled "Does Your Man Need a Wellness Wakeup Call?" is presented by Men's Health.

From the hunk in the office to old, bald granddad, we’re looking at men... from the inside out. It’s not about the hair or the muscle, the clothes or the car. It’s about what’s inside your guy. Specifically, we’re talking about cholesterol, which is one of the most important keys to men living a long, healthy life. Men’s Health contributor and sports nutritionist Dr. Chris Mohr provides important information that every man needs to know.

No matter how good he looks on the outside, it’s what’s inside that really counts. You’ve heard that line before, right? Well, this time it’s serious. Consider these statistics:

  • Heart disease is second only to all cancers combined in years of potential life lost for men.

  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death in men; the main form, coronary heart disease, caused 380,000 deaths in 2010.

  • The estimated economic cost of cardiovascular disease for 2009 was $313 billion:
    • $192 billion in direct health expenditures

    • $121 billion in indirect cost of mortality

Even if a man works out regularly and isn’t overweight, it doesn’t mean he’s the picture of health. There’s a lot he may not know that could mean the difference between life and death.
