I wish I had a had a nickel for every time somebody asked me if I think they should start blogging, and if they can make money as a blogger. If all the people who ask me this would pay me a nickel, I would probably make more money than I do as a blogger.
I answer the first question, “Do you think I should start a blog,” with a question. I ask them, “Hmmm…should you?” If that seems unfair or evasive, well, life IS unfair and I AM being evasive. A little waxing philosophical about it usually leads a person to an answer.
As for the second question, “Do you think I can make money blogging,” well, I laugh - HARD. Can you make money as a blogger? Well, can you win the lotto? Maybe, I mean, probably not, but if you don’t play, how will you win? Know what I’m sayin’?
So today, in response to the many emails, messages and face-to -face queries about blogging, I decided to continue my philosophizing, using wisdom from the ultimate seeker of truth and waxer or philosophy – ARISTOTLE!
The energy of mind is the essence of life. ~Aristotle
Do you feel the need to share YOUR essence? Do you?
Knowing yourself is the wisdom of all beginning. ~Aristotle
Can you define that essence? Who ARE you?
No excellent soul is exempt from a mixture of madness. ~Aristotle
If you are worried that others will think your essence is insane, you are right to consider this. Some will think you are a hot mess, crazy to be "putting it all out there!" You will be judged.
Friendship is a single soul living in two bodies. ~Aristotle
Others might think your essence is genius, that you are brave and generous. Your blog might change a life, heal a wound, touch a soul. Or not.
A friend to all is a friend to none. ~Aristotle
Ah, but it's important to know that there WILL be people who disagree with you and seek to hurt you. You can't please everyone. Even if only your mom and your Aunt Bertha are reading your stuff, blogging is about speaking your mind and when you do that, you are bound to piss people off.
Every heart sings a song, incomplete, until another whispers back. ~Aristotle
Also, don't kid yourself, saying that you are just writing for yourself and that you don't care who reads your posts or what they think of them. If that acutally IS the case, you should journal. Don't blog if you don't want to connect, to receive feedback or to "put yourself out there." Believe me, once you hit that publish button, your stuff is OUT THERE BABY!
