“How do I get rid of my sweet tooth?” This is one of the most common questions we get when it comes to teaching people about proper nutrition.
In this day and age with all the highly processed foods, some of which are supposed to be “diet foods” to help you lose weight yet allow you to indulge in something sweet, it’s hard to overcome our uncontrollable cravings for sugar.
Eating large amounts of sugar causes your blood glucose levels to spike (sugar high), then shortly after your blood glucose drops (sugar low), which gives you that feeling of wanting more what…..Sugar.
To be honest, there’s no easy answer. Especially if you are used to eating high amounts of sugar and processed carbohydrates. To truly get over your sugar cravings, you just have to stop eating it on a regular basis. But here are some tips to help you at least control those urges to grab a Snickers bar for a mid-afternoon snack.
• Eat every 3 hours. Eating this often will help to keep blood sugar from dropping too low, which causes people to feel shaky, weak, and like they want to eat their entire kitchen. Not only will you prevent a drop in blood sugar, but you’ll also keep your metabolism high too.
• Eat protein with every meal and snack. Protein helps to keep you feeling fuller longer, and also helps to increase your metabolism.
• If you are going to eat something with sugar in it, make sure it’s from fruit. Mix berries with some plain Greek yogurt and a little bit of Truvia, or eat an apple with a natural nut butter.
• Start cutting as much sugar out as you realistically can. Although going cold turkey works for some, it can be too hard for others, so gradually cut down on sugar until you are only eating it for special occasions.
Hopefully these tips help you to alleviate that sweet tooth. It does take some willpower, but cutting down on sugar is well worth it!
