Q: What can I do to reduce my risks for breast cancer?
A: 1. Know your family history and talk to your doctor
2. Get screened - clinical breast exam beginning at age 20 and for women at "normal" risk, mammograms beginning at age 40.
3. Know what is normal for you - report any changes in how your breasts look or feel.
4. Make healthy lifestyle choices - maintain a health weight, exercise, limit alcohol intake.
Q: When should I start getting mammograms?
A: Talk with your health care provider. For women at normal risk, we recommend mammograms beginning at age 40.
Q: What if I don't have health insurance or cannot afford to pay for a mammogram?
A: You may qualify for a free or low-cost mammogram depending on your income. Komen Mid-Michigan funds a number of programs in the Mid-Michigan area. Additionally, we can help you get connected with your local health department Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention Program.
