Lincoln Cares FAQ

Q: Why do we need Lincoln Cares?
A:
Even though Lincoln claims no oceans or mountains or other natural resources—we have one of the best park systems in the nation, with 126 parks and 128 miles of trails connecting nearly every part of our city. Our parks system is free and open to the public, 365 days a year.

Parks programs and facilities offer a good deal for Lincoln’s residents. According to a 2004 study by the Trust for Public Land, the cost of park and recreation facilities in Lincoln is about $44 per resident annually—about 25 percent less than the national standard.

Q: How do people participate in Lincoln Cares?
A:
There are 4 Easy Ways to Donate:

  • Simply add $1 to your LES bill payment each month.
  • If you are an automatic bank bill customer and do not have Lincoln Cares automatically added to your monthly bill, just call LES at 475-4211 and ask them to do this for you.
  • If you are not currently an automatic bank bill customer with LES, log on to www.les.com and type Cares in the search box. Then click on the LES Automatic Bank Billing Form option. Fill out the necessary information. Be sure to select the Lincoln Cares option at the bottom of the form. LES will deduct your bill payment from your bank account with an additional $1 for Lincoln Cares automatically each month. It’s a convenient, easy way to support Lincoln Cares!
  • Send your donation directly to the Lincoln Parks and Recreation Foundation, 2740 A Street, Lincoln, NE 68502. Make the check payable to Lincoln Cares.

Q: How much has been collected by Lincoln Cares?
A:
Since 2003, LES customers and corporate donors have contributed more than $650,000 to Lincoln Cares! These funds pay for the extra programs and projects that make Lincoln an extra special place to live.

Q: What makes Lincoln Cares so successful?
A:
Lincoln Cares is a wonderful example of how government can work. Bolstered by corporate matching funds, Lincoln Cares gives everyone a chance to voluntarily do something extra to beautify our community.

Each year, the public-private Lincoln Cares Advisory Board identifies community projects that will receive the contributions. Consideration is given to city projects not included in the regular city improvement budget that benefit a large number of citizens. This voluntary program aims to be an augmentation of tax funds, not a substitution for taxes.

Every $1 donated to Lincoln Cares nearly doubles with support from our corporate funding partners—Time Warner Cable and the Lincoln Parks Foundation will generously provide a 50-cent match for every dollar contributed.

Q: What are some of the Lincoln Cares projects around town?
