When it comes to necessary sports equipment, experts say those who play sports during the summer may require a few extra items.
Whether they're attending a soccer camp, training for the upcoming football season or simply getting some exercise outdoors, the high temperatures and humidity can have damaging effects on athletes with heat exhaustion and even heat stroke possible.
"Practice is a necessary part of getting ready for the season, but safety is paramount," said Greenwich Hospital pediatrician Dr. Toni Salvatore. "As a coach or parent I would have a very low threshold if a child complained of anything from dizziness to nausea while playing sports when it's uncomfortably hot out."
Experts say the number one piece of necessary equipment during the warmer months is a water bottle, as staying hydrated is important to stay healthy and avoid heat-related illnesses.
"Choose water and occasional sport drinks with added electrolytes for a serious athlete," said Dr. Salvatore.
Other items that are important for those training during the summer include lightweight, breathable clothing, sunscreen and a spray bottle to use to mist water onto the skin and cool down.
Symptoms parents and coaches need to look out for include hot, dry or red skin, lightheadedness, dizziness and nausea
